Southern Mentawai Outpost is an eco-minded surf camp on Sibigau Island in the far south of the Mentawais, built from bamboo with solar power and a front-row seat to Thunders, one of Indonesia’s most consistent swell magnets. You wake up looking at the reef, paddle straight out when it is on, or jump in the dinghy for a drop-off. A tight cluster of more than ten breaks sits within roughly ten miles, with both lefts and rights in play, so there is always a session to be had.

Accommodation is deliberately small and mellow. There are five beachside bamboo bungalows with two beds in each, plus a shared bath block, hot meals, and Starlink Wi-Fi for checking charts or calling home. Capacity is capped at around ten guests, which keeps the vibe uncrowded and the lineup friendly.

Marine ops are a standout for this size of camp. The fleet includes a custom 35-foot twin-200 hp speedboat, two 20-foot pangas, and a 16-foot aluminium tinny for quick runs, VIP drop-offs to Thunders, or mellow alternatives when it is too big out front. Strike missions run on a transparent fuel-recovery model so crews share only what they use.

Logistics are clear. Typical schedules run Friday–Friday 7 or 14 surf days, Monday–Friday 11, Friday–Monday 10, or Thursday–Friday 8.

Safety and sustainability are baked in. The camp sits at the base of a 25-metre hill with a marked evacuation route, boats on moorings for deep-water options, and long-running local operator experience on the team.
