About the Wave Hunter
Step aboard the Wave Hunter Mentawai and you’ll find a straightforward, surf-first live-aboard that has been purpose-refined for chasing world-class reef breaks, without the ultra-luxury price tag. The vessel is about 70 ft long, with substantial wooden/50mm plank construction and twin Mitsubishi 622 engines (280 hp each) ensuring hull speeds around 10–12 knots.
Accommodation is air-conditioned throughout: you’ll stay in either the couple cabins (two double cabins) or the dormitory room (12 beds) depending on your preference or group. The main decks feature multiple outdoor lounge/relaxation areas including a full-360° top deck view of the ocean, ideal for keeping an eye on swell, sunsets and surf windows.
From a surf-logistics standpoint, the key is mobility: the Wave Hunter is capable of repositioning nightly (or as needed) based on swell and wind, giving guests access to premium waves across the Mentawai and Telo archipelagos. On board you’ll find Surf transfers via aluminium dinghies (40hp), snorkelling/fishing gear, free beers (24 per person) and a balanced menu covering Indonesian, Brazilian, Mexican & Western cuisine - vegetarian options available with notice.
In short: if you’re looking for a surf boat that puts most of its budget into getting you on great waves (versus ultra-luxury fittings), and you’re comfortable with dorm rooms or shared space, the Wave Hunter Mentawai delivers one of the best value live-aboard options in the Mentawai Islands.
